The attached image is the time-height plot of the Northern Annular Mode index at each level from 1000 to 1 hPa for the period centered on the Feb 1979 SSW.  The President's Day storm happened right as the hemisphere transitioned from + to - NAM conditions between 500 and 10 hPa.  Interesting!
