Hi ATM409/509 Students, I have consulted with Lance for Question 2b and how to go about answering it. Refer to the HW#2 PDF: http://www.atmos.albany.edu/daes/atmclasses/atm509/hw/ATM_409_509_HW2_Fall2016.pdf The note Lance made: "you will have to play meteorologist in order to perform this calculation" implies that you will need to fetch data not currently contained in the HW assignment. You can do this using the links provided in the pdf, which provide NARR data from two different sources (NCDC, ESRL). These links are reproduced below: NCDC: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/data-access/model-data/model-datasets/north-american-regional-reanalysis-narr ESRL: http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/cgi-bin/data/narr/plothour.pl You may also use another dataset of your choice for the relevant area and date, but please be explicit in stating your dataset, resolution, and temperature values obtained (with a source of your data). Also, for those that have shown me code of some of the solution for Q#2, make sure you are also writing up the proper equations/calculations so I can check your math when grading. Finally, the answer for #2b shouldn't change regardless if you are using the temperature tendency or potential temperature tendency, so feel free to use what you feel more comfortable with.
