Lake effect snow showers and flurries over the Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley will gradually taper off this evening, allowing for dry weather tonight and through most of the day Wednesday. Some light freezing rain is expected Wednesday night, which will change to plain rain for Thursday into Friday thanks to warming temperatures. A return to colder weather and a wintry mix is expected over the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Some lingering lake effect snow showers and flurries over the Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley will gradually taper off this evening as the cold frontal boundary sags south through the area with increasing subsidence. This should allow for breaks in the cloud cover, and with high pressure building in at the surface, decent radiational cooling will set up overnight tonight. Temperatures are expected to dip into the upper single digits in the high terrain to lower teens elsewhere. High pressure will slide through the area tomorrow and exit off to our east by tomorrow afternoon. Surface winds will turn out of the south, allowing temperatures to begin to moderate and warm. High temperatures tomorrow afternoon will be slightly above normal, in the lower to mid 30s. A weak upper level shortwave moves into the area from the west late tomorrow afternoon/evening, bringing the chance for light freezing rain to most of the area. Model soundings indicate that surface temperatures should cool below freezing by precip onset, with a low level warm nose in place. This would allow for light freezing rain for points mainly along and north of Albany late Wednesday through about 7 AM on Thursday, before changing to plain rain for the rest of Thursday. Total QPF should only be a few hundredths to a tenth of an inch, but it could be enough to produce a slick coating of ice on all any untreated surfaces, especially considering how cold ground conditions have been recently. We will continue to highlight this threat in the HWO. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... Temps will hold steady or slightly rise on Wed night through the upper 20s and into the mid 30s. By Thursday morning, there still could be a few pockets of freezing rain for northern areas, but most areas should be rising just above freezing. Also, precip will become light and spotty, with the main threat for northern areas, as upper level ridging strengthens southeast of the area. Temps will continue to warm through the day and reach the upper 30s to mid 40s for high temps, although it looks to stay fairly cloudy with a few spotty rain showers (mostly for western and northern areas). Rainfall looks to become more widespread for Thursday night, as a strengthening southerly low-level jet continues to increase the isentropic lift over the area ahead of an advancing storm system. We have kept POPs categorical for much of the area for Thursday night into Friday with a steady light to moderate rainfall expected and temps holding fairly steady in the mid to upper 40s. Rain will continue through the day Friday as the storm system gets closer to the area. Temperatures will remain warm, in the upper 40s to lower 50s Friday afternoon. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... Latest global model consensus is slowly coming around toward a warmer solution Friday night into Saturday, however, arctic boundary remains very close by as the potential for a wintry mixture to the north of Albany remains a good possibility. In the wake of the passing storm that is forecast to track across the region, a rapid cold advection pattern is expected for Sunday and into Monday. So several hazard concerns for the long term with a period of milder temperatures along with increasing rainfall amounts across the region. This may result in ice breaking up and moving along rivers and streams through Friday into Saturday. In addition, question is a backdoor cold/arctic boundary situated along the St Lawrence Valley. The strength of the high situated across the Dakotas into southern tier of Canada is averaging around 1045MB. Low level ageostrophic flow and its magnitudes differ in the GFS/ECMWF with the ECMWF a bit stronger which suggests the freezing rain potential a bit stronger just north of the Capital Region with the GFS a bit further north than that so a compromise solution places portions of the Adirondacks, Lake George Saratoga Region. This front is expected to lift northward through Saturday as the surface low tracks along or west of I95. Dry slot approaches during the daylight hours Saturday across most of the region which should reduce precipitation coverage as we watch the passage of this surface low. The passage should allow for a cold front to push through Saturday night as deformation axis will be close the region (mainly into eastern NY). The combination of falling temperatures and some light snow could make for hazardous traveling conditions across the region with freezing temperatures and some light snow accumulations. Sunday night into Monday the consensus favors the aforementioned ridge of high pressure to provide tranquil yet chilly air mass across the region as those H850 temperatures fall back yet again well into the negative teens (after being around +10C about 48 hours earlier). Highly variable temperatures through the long term with precipitation likely above normal. && .AVIATION /21Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Residual lake effect snow showers and flurries appear to remain mainly west of the TAF sites as this activity will not be included into the forecast. Through the afternoon, VFR conditions should prevail under BKN-OVC CIGS. Those CIGS should break up through the evening hours with VFR conditions prevailing through the end of the forecast cycle ending 18Z/Wed. Winds will remain gusty through the afternoon hours from the west- northwest. Those winds should subside this evening with light and variable winds tonight into Wednesday morning. Outlook... After recent very cold weather, river and lake ice has become increased across the region. Based off temperature analysis, river and lake ice is estimated between 6 and 15 inches thick. Temperatures are finally near normal today and will continue into tomorrow, with above normal temperatures expected later for the remainder of the work week. Aside from a few light lake effect snow showers over far western areas, the majority of the region remained dry today. These snow showers should gradually taper off this evening, allowing for mainly dry weather tonight into tomorrow. As a storm system approaches from the west, some light freezing rain is expected tomorrow evening into tomorrow night, although amounts will generally be light. By late in the week, temperatures will rise above normal and a period of rainfall is expected as well for Thursday into Friday. There is also uncertainty with the eventual storm track for the weekend, but it looks like there is a possibility that the rain will change back over to a wintry mix on Saturday before ending. The combination of rainfall and snow melt will allow for river and stream levels to increase. Depending on just how much rainfall occurs and how warm temperatures get (and for how long) will determine if any hydrologic impacts occur.
