This study is NSF-funded work, the objective of which is to develop and enhanced understanding of the complex lifecycles of Atlantic tropcial disturbances over the course of an entire hurricane season. The 2001 hurricane season is chosen as the case year for this study both because of the large number of tropical systems and because of their diverse lifecycles, which included tropical transitions, extratropical transitions, classic easterly-wave genesis mechanisms, Gulf of Mexico cyclogenesis, et cetera. Presented here are preliminary results from various portions of the study.
The plots contained in this section are based on the raw 500 hPa height fields from the full-resolution (1 deg) Global Forecast System (AVN) analyses.
The plots contained in this section are based on digitally-filtered 500 hPa height fields. The synoptic cutoff is chosen as 5 days, so low-pass results show features whose frequencies are lower than 5 days, and high-pass results show features whose frequencies are above the cutoff.
