The climatological distribution of tornadoes in this region is unlike any other part of the Southeast.
There is a distinct difference in the distribution of all tornadoes (peak in late spring) vs. F2 or greater tornadoes (peak in late winter). This distribution also differs greatly from other parts of the southeast. The cool season maximum in tornado occurrence tends to be in February.
As with CO, the diurnal distribution is difficult to discern from a simple line graph, although there does seem to be at least 3 peak times of occurrence for cool season tornadoes: 0500 UTC, 1100 UTC, and 1800 UTC.
Note the peak in F2 or greater tornado occurrence between 0900 and 1200 UTC in February. As the months progress, this peak shifts from early morning hours towards 2100 UTC, which is associated strongly with diurnal heating. There is a smaller peak in tornado occurrence during Jan/Feb between 0300 and 0600 UTC.
