Synoptic-Dynamics
Maps All fields are generated from the 0.5° Global Forecasting System (GFS) four-times-daily runs using the NCAR Command Language (NCL). 0000Z (available at 0600Z), 0600Z (available at 1200Z), 1200Z (available at 1800Z), 1800Z (available at 0000Z). However, no guarantees are made on the availability of these images. This page is meant to be an "expert's resource" it should not be used for decision-making by nonqualified individuals. All maps include Gareth Berry's objective trough (0.25 x 10-5 s-1 solid) and easterly jet (-10 m s-1 dashes) diagnostics. These are computed at 650 hPa using data that has been degraded to 1.5° to highlight synoptic scale features. The source code and an NCL function for producing these is available here. Isentropic vertical motion was also computed using data degraded to 1.5°. Past images go back 1 week and forecasts go to 96 hours. This page is supported by the NSF.
