There are multiple opportunities available for geoscience students who wish to gain unique experiences in research, leadership, and professional development. Not sure how to find those opportunities? To facilitate this search, I have compiled a list of opportunities below.

Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS)

  • This program is intended for underrepresented minority students in atmospheric or related sciences.
  • It offers unique opportunities for research and professional development at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) or at other selected research laboraties.
  • Each summer internship lasts for 11 weeks, but students can apply to go back for up to 4 summers.
  • Besides research, students are trained in writing and presenting their work to the scientific community.
  • Deadline: typically the first week of February

NOAA Educational Partnership Program, Undergraduate Scholarship

  • This program is also intended for underrepresented minority students in atmospheric or related sciences.
  • The program consists of two summer internships: scholars spend their first summer at the NOAA offices in Silver Spring, MD and their second summer in other NOAA office of their preference (in my case, I went to the Hurricane Research Division in Miami, FL).
  • In addition to the internship, students are awarded a scholarship for up to 2 years.
  • Deadline: typically in January or February
