Ontario Lake-Effect Snows Create "Ideal Laboratory" for Meteorologists

Justin Minder of UAlbany and Scott Steiger of SUNY Oswego lead teams studying topography and boundary layer processes that influence where and how fast snow will fall.

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 3, 2014) - As a blizzard shut down much of northern New York State in early January, researchers from the University at Albany and SUNY Oswego took to the shores of Lake Ontario to peer into the innards of the storm.

In fact, along with colleagues from campuses as far-flung as Alabama and Utah, Justin Minder, assistant professor in UAlbany's Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, and Scott Steiger, associate professor of meteorology at Oswego, spent most of December and January in the field, studying the region's lake effect snow.
