DIURNAL ANOMALIES

Below are animations of anomalous diurnal convection. The anomalies represent the OLR for a given hour averaged over a time period minus the daily mean value for that same time period. Loops of 3-hourly data(00,03,06,09,12,18,21) are shown below:

1999:

The OLR anomaly fields for the 1999 season were derived using GOES-8 IR data. These fields represent 16km OLR data interpolated to a 0.2deg latlon grid.

  • Period from July 1, 1999 to July 31, 1999.

  • Period from August 1, 1999 to September 30, 1999.

  • Period from August 1, 1999 to August 31, 1999.

  • Period from September 1, 1999 to September 30, 1999.

  • Period from October 1, 1999 to October 31, 1999.

    2001:

The OLR anomaly fields forthe 2001 season were derived using 4km IR data from CPC which has been converted to OLR fields and interpolated to a 0.2deg latlon grid.

  • Period from September 1, 2001 to September30, 2001.

  • Period from Sept 14, 2001 to Oct 14,2001.

  • Period from Oct 1, 2001 to Oct 14,2001.
