Graduate Programs

The Faculty of the Atmospheric Sciences Program of the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences comprises scientists from the Department, and the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center. This combination of two distinct but related institutions gives the University at Albany the largest program of education and research in the atmospheric sciences in New York State. The ASRC and the local office of the National Weather Service (NWS) a are both located in the Center for Environmental Sciences and Technology Management (CESTM), which is within easy walking distance of the Department. The Graduate Program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in a wide variety of research topics in atmospheric and environmental sciences.

The current group of scientists covers a broad range of interests in the atmospheric and environmental sciences. A summary description of the three broad areas of research we offer for graduate study can be found by clicking the "Research Areas" tab above. Students may also combine these areas or propose interdisciplinary research with other departments, such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Nanoscience, Geography, Environmental Health Sciences, and Public Affairs. Opportunities exist for internships and cooperative research with the Albany National Weather Service office which is located on the University campus. Some of this cooperative research is through the CSTAR program.

Members of the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences are funded externally by agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Office for Naval Research (ONR), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Air Force Office for Scientific Research (AFOSR) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).

Graduate Assistantships

Fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships are available for students in the doctoral program with stipends beginning at $22,000 per calendar year. Students in the master's program are eligible only for research assistantships with 12-month stipends of $20,000. Tuition scholarships for up to 18 credits per year are offered to all students receiving financial support.

Students are encouraged to apply directly to the PhD program even if their immediate goal is the MS degree.
