This is a 10-month appointment that allows supplementary summer salary from research funding. Candidates with experience in the following two possible areas are encouraged to apply: Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions or Climate-Cryosphere Dynamics and Feedbacks. The ideal candidate for the first area would have a solid grounding in the theory of physical interactions and feedbacks between ocean and atmosphere on climate-relevant timescales (interannual or longer). The ideal candidate for the second area would have expertise in any aspect related to the cryosphere and its interactions with climate, using models, observations, remote sensing and/or theory. However, candidates whose research specialization complements existing research programs in the department are also encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be expected to carry out the responsibilities of a full-time faculty member in the DAES which includes (i) teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, (ii) maintaining a strong externally funded research program, (iii) mentoring and supervision of graduate students and (iv) participating, as necessary, in all service and programmatic activities of the Department, College and University.
Requirements:
Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. by Sept 2012 in atmospheric, environmental or earth science, or a closely related field from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization. Candidates are expected to provide evidence that they can teach with distinction at the undergraduate and graduate level and be an effective mentor of graduate students. Applicants must also address in their applications their ability to work with and instruct culturally diverse populations. The Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (DAES) of the University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks applicants at the Assistant (tenure track) or Associate Professor level, effective Fall 2012. These are 10-month appointments that allow for supplementary summer salary from research funding. The successful candidates will be expected to carry out the responsibilities of full-time faculty members in the DAES. These positions are in addition to those already being offered by the department, and are part of a bold multi-year "2020 initiative" to expand the programs in Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences and to build a better understanding of processes on the interface between weather and climate and its connections to various public and private sector interests including the energy industry.
We are seeking to fill two positions, one with expertise in each of two different areas:
1. Weather-Climate Interactions2. Hydrometeorology
Requirements:
The ideal candidate for the first area would have expertise to carry out fundamental analysis of available observations to highlight the nature of the interactions between weather and climate. The ideal candidate will also have experience and skills needed to relate and communicate his or her research to the needs of the energy industry or the private sector in general. This will be a key hire to help establish and promote this new initiative.
The ideal candidate for the second area should have expertise in the study of water in the atmosphere and at the surface of the earth. The ideal candidate will also have expertise in remote sensing as related to the study of the water cycle and extreme hydrometeorological events. Candidates should have experience and skills relating and communicating their fundamental research in hydrometeorology to the energy industry or the broader private and public sectors.
Candidates whose research specialization complements existing research programs in the department are particularly encouraged to apply. By September 1, 2012, qualified candidates must have a doctorate in Atmospheric, Environmental or Earth Science, or a closely related field, from a university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization. We expect new faculty to strengthen our Majors (Atmospheric Science and Environmental Sciences), strengthen our graduate program, and strengthen the University mission through (i) teaching with distinction, (ii) maintaining a strong externally funded research program, (iii) effectively mentoring graduate students, and (iv) participating as necessary in service to the department, college, and the university. Applicants must also address in their applications their ability to work with and instruct culturally diverse populations.
