Welcome to the Map Discussion Home Page!

Friday map discussion at UAlbany was established in 1999 by Professor Bosart for the purpose of fostering research-level discussions of current weather and climate from anywhere in the world. The discussions are open to all-comers. The twin goals of Friday map discussion were to identify new weather- and climate-related research opportunities along with ways that these opportunities could benefit operations, and to provide a forum for the exchange of new research- and operations-based ideas about weather and climate with the larger national and international community. The first goal has been accomplished through the creation of new student- and faculty-initiated research projects that arose from weather- and climate-related research opportunities first identified during Friday map discussion. The second goal has been accomplished through the creation of the UAlbany map listserv that serves as a forum to discuss weather- and climate-related research and operations ideas either raised during Friday map discussion or by external listserv members from around the world based on the real-time weather and climate situation. The UAlbany map listserv, overseen by Professor Bosart, has grown to a national and international membership of ~850 graduate students, research scientists, operational forecasters, and operations directors.
