in AL/GA the day before (1 Mar). The most devastating storm
occurred
~1915 UTC 1 Mar in

These six metar
stations surround
the W,
~60 km to the NNW, ~25 km to the NE, ~40 km to the ESE, ~60
km to the
SW and ~95 km to the SW, respectively.

From the appended imagery, the assorted
web links, and the
metars given below, the following points can be made about
the AL/GA
tornado
outbreak in particular and the storm system in general:
1.
The large-scale environment, while not especially noteworthy, was
quite
characteristic of cool season tornado outbreak days.
2.
The soundings indicated a high-shear environment (surface-to-6 km
shears
exceeded 60 kt and surface-to-1 km shears exceeded 40
kt) and
a
relatively low
J/kg except in isolated spots). The low-level jet exceeded 50 kt.
3.
The AL/GA tornadoes occurred in on the anticyclonic shear side of
a
cyclonically curved subtropical jet (STJ) exit region. The 300/250
hPa flow
in the STJ exit region was quite diffluent by 0000 UTC 2
Mar
and looked to be a result of the ongoing convection.
4.
The storm complex that spawned the AL/GA tornadoes was not
associated
with any classic synoptic-scale frontal boundary.
5.
The supercell-spawned tornado that devastated
on the
southern edge of the storm complex and had the "benefit" of a
direct
inflow of unmodified moist Gulf air.
6.
Satellite and radar loops suggested that the
formed
over the northern
moved
NNE/NE. Cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning was not detected in the
(

CG activity started abruptly over northern FL near the
fairly
abruptly between 1700-1800 UTC 1 Mar at which time the storm
in the
radar base reflectivity imagery took on supercell
characteristics.
8.
Surface data (see attached NCAR/RAP maps for 1700-2000 UTC 1 Mar,
attached
buoy/C-MAN meteograms, and appended metar obs below)
suggest
that the storms that became severe formed in a broad
confluent
zone between SSE/SE and S flow over the northern Gulf of
and
central AL/GA.
9.
More specifically, the storms that became severe looked as though
they
formed and fed off of a wind shift boundary within the
aforementioned
broad confluence zone. The attached buoy/C-MAN and
appended metar obs indicate that this
wind-shift boundary was fairly
continuous
and was marked by 20-40 degrees of veering winds from
SSE/SE to S.
This boundary can be tracked from buoys 42039/42040
northeastward
through CEW, 0J4, 79J, TOI, OZR and DHN.
10.
At several stations (e.g., DHN, 0J4 and OZR) there is evidence
that the
winds backed by 10-20 deg in the hour before the tornado
struck
1
Mar).
11.
As noted above,
and CEW.
The metar obs look to be
fairly complete for these
stations.
The data looks good enough to me that the line integral
technique
can be use to calculate the relative vorticity and
divergence
within the domain defined by these six stations
(
12.
None the available upper-air maps, model-initialized fields, and
WV/IR/VIS
satellite loops indicate any obvious feature that can be
associated
with the wind shift boundary that was first detected at
buoys
42039/42040 over the northern
northeastward
across the FL panhandle and southern AL/GA (CAUTION: I
have not
had the chance to check conditions further upstream over
the Gulf
and to carefully scrutinize the assorted model-initialized
fields.
13.
Subsequent to the reported tornadoes, wind damage occurred along
a line
that extended northeastward along the
east-central
NC. Over SC/NC this line of diminishing severe weather
activity
coincided with a surface coastal front boundary (surface
theta and
mixing ratio maps can be found at Heather Archambault's
web
link).
14.
The radar loops for selected locations up the East Coast (see
Heather
Archambault's web link) suggest that the broad rain area
that
contained the
maintained
its identity and became very concentrated along the
coastal
front. This coastal front extended from near DCA to just
north of
NYC to just west of BOS. The rainfall became quite
concentrated
along the coastal front (peak hourly amounts of 1.0-1.5
cm).
15.
The heaviest rains in the Northeast occurred just ahead of what
looked to
be a surface warm-front wave that formed along the coastal
front
between NYC and PHL and then scooted off to the northeast.
16.
This warm front wave formed close to the downstream ridge axis.
The
flow above it was quite diffluent (also divergent according to
the
attached 1200 UTC 2 Mar 300 hPa analysis from the SPC). By 1200
UTC
2 Mar there was also evidence that the warm front wave was
beginning
to benefit from a coupled jet structure (see
aforementioned
attached 300 hPa analysis). At issue is
what extent
the
downstream ridge/jet development was influenced by the
substantial
diabatic heating associated with the observed
storm-total
30-90 cm rains (most of which fell in < 12 h).
17.
An interesting scientific question is whether the surface
warm-front
wave had any of the characteristics of a diabatic Rossby
wave/vortex
of the type cites by Moore and Montgomery and referenced
in
previous map discussions.
Thoughts and comments (especially
rebuttal arguments and
alternative
ideas) are welcome. Ditto for any other data goodies.

has any interesting mesoscale simulations that can shed light
on some
of the observed surface structures, please give a holler.
