- March 2020: Justin and Massey publish a new paper on Characterizing and Constraining Uncertainty Associated with Surface and Boundary Layer Turbulent Fluxes in Simulations of Lake-Effect Snowfall.
- January 2019: Pat attendeds the CUAHSI Snow Measurement Field School in New Hampshire. The skills he honed will get put to use as he collects data at NYS Mesonet sites to evaluate and improve the National Water Model.
- January 2019: Justin and Massey present their work on characterizing and constraining the sensitivity of lake-effect snow forecasts to physics parameterizations in high-resolution forecasts at the AMS Annual Meeting in Boston, MA. Links: here, here
- December 2019: Massey Bartolini completes his MS degree with the thesis: "Convection-permitting ensemble forecasts of the 10-12 December 2013 lake-effect snow event: sensitivity to microphysical, planetary boundary layer, and surface layer parameterizations" Congrats!
- December 2019: Justin gives talks on "The importance of the snow albedo feedback for understanding and projecting changes in mountain climates" and "Evaluating the skill of GPM-IMERG satellite precipitation estimation over the mountains of central Chile" at

Justin and Pat summarize Minder Group's research on winter weather and snow to
US Representative Paul Tonko during his
visit to UAlbany's Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sceinces.
- September 2019:
New NOAA grant, "Improving Snow and Streamflow Simulation in the National Water Model by Leveraging
Advanced Mesonet Observations from the Northeastern United States", will fund Minder group's research.
We will use unique observations from the
NYS Mesonet
to improve the representation of snow in NOAA's
National Water Model
via evaluation and improvement of model parameterizations and data assimilation.
- Aug. - Sept. 2019:
Justin attends the
1st TEAMx Workshop
and the
35th International Conference on Alpine Meteorology (ICAM) in the Italian Alps.
Justin served on the Programme Committee for ICAM and presented research on
"The impact of snow cover loss under climate warming on convective orographic rainfall"
and "Evaluating the skill of GPM-IMERG satellite precipitation estimation over the mountains of central Chile".
- August 2019:
Minder Group welcomes two new graduate students: Pat Naple and Matthew Seymour.
- August 2019:
New NOAA grant, "Advancing Probabilistic Prediction of High-Impact Winter Storms through Ensemble NWP and Post-Processing", will fund Minder group's research on winter storms in collaboration with Jim Steenburgh's group at UUtah. A major focus will be on evaluating and improving probabilistic predictions of winter storms using stochastic physics parameterizations. We will be leveraging data from the OWLeS and OLYMPEX field campaigns.
- July 2019: New NOAA CSTAR grant will fund Minder group's research into improving understanding and prediction of precipitation type under near-freezing conditions in complex terrain.
- July 2019: Justin gives an invited talk on "The Role of the Snow Albedo Feedback in Regional Climate Change over Mountains as Revealed by High-Resolution RCM Experiments" at the 27th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in Montreal, Canada.
- June 2019: Yazmina Rojas recieves a student travel award and presents her research on "Evaluating the Skill of GPM-IMERG Satellite Precipitation Estimation over the Mountains of Central Chile" at the The International Precipitation Conference in Irvine, CA.
- May 2019: Terry Allard presents research on alpine tundra and climate change at the The Annual Conference on the Adirondacks in Lake Placid, NY.
- May 2019: Brendan Wallace completes his MS degree with the thesis: "The Simulated Impact of Snow Cover and Soil Moisture on Convective Precipitation within the Rocky Mountains under Climate Warming." Congrats!
- April 2019: Justin and Massey provide a demonstration weather balloon launch as part of UAlbany's Family Earth Day event.
